What Type of Writer Do You Need?

Business is complex, and so is business writing. If you are thinking about hiring a writer to help you with written communication, know that there are several types of writers, and one may be better suited to your needs than others. With each type of writer, take the time to research several potential candidates and interview them thoroughly to make sure they will be able to accurately and effectively express your ideas in writing. Ask for samples to be sure their style is in alignment with your goals.

  • Copywriter. Documents that go out to customers or potential customers–such as websites, newsletters, brochures, and mailers–are considered marketing collateral. Any writing in these materials is called “copy.” A copywriter is the person who writes it. A copywriter should be able to thoroughly understand all aspects of your business and express your ideas in an engaging way.
  • Ghost Writer. Whereas a copywriter typically represents a company, a ghost writer typically represents an individual. The ghost writer writes articles, books, stories, or other pieces on behalf of the individual who is credited for the work. A ghost writer should be able to conduct research and interviews to understand the topic, and present it in a style that is compatible with your personality and message.
  • Technical Writer. A technical writer writes technical documentation in the form of online help, user guides, white papers, etc. This person should either have a technical background and be able to write well, or be a skilled writer who is fully capable of understanding technical concepts.
  • SEO Writer. An SEO writer writes text for online media, strategically including keywords to draw attention from search engines. An SEO copywriter needs to understand both copywriting concepts, and SEO strategies, as well as how to combine the two effectively.
  • Grant Writer. A grant writer writes grant proposals, assembles supporting documents, and ensures application guidelines are met. A good grant writer will understand the mission of your organization, the funding that is available to support it, and where the two intersect. Grant writers should be able to creatively spell out the need for funds, accurately describe outcomes, and efficiently mind the details of the application process.
