Got a snappy title? Great! You’ve captured readers’ attention. Got a compelling intro? Fantastic. You’ve given them a reason to start reading. But, what are you doing to keep them interested? Of course, your document must offer valuable information, so WHAT you write is key. But, HOW you write also plays a role in retaining reader interest. Here are some tips for spicing up your writing and keeping readers reading:
Evoke a Physical Sensation
If appropriate for your context, audience, and style, use words like “slimy” (touch), “pop” (sound), “bitter” (taste), “pungent” (smell), or “dazzling” (sight). Words that evoke a physical sensation allow readers to experience your ideas on a more immediate–and therefore more engaging–level.
Vary Sentence Length
A string of several sentences of a similar length can become monotonous. If you notice yourself writing this way, try breaking up longer sentences, or combining shorter ones. Notice how shorter sentences provide emphasis.
Use Modifiers Sparingly
Limit your use of modifiers. Instead, choose more powerful nouns and verbs. For example, use “skyscraper” rather than “tall building” or “rush” instead of “move quickly.”
Make ‘Em Laugh
Go for humor if you’re funny, insight if you’re not. Making people laugh is a good way to keep them interested in what you have to say. But, be honest with yourself. If no one has ever commented on your great sense of humor, you might want to reconsider using it in your writing. Instead, provide insights that will earn you an “a-ha” moment, rather than a “ha-ha” moment.
Paint a Picture
If your subject matter is concrete, describe it in detail. If it’s not, use a colorful analogy to paint a picture for your readers. For example, a company that provides shipping services might describe the experience of doing business with them as being like having one’s own personal currier.
